Rhett and Trixie: a story of independence

Rhett and Trixie

Rhett never imagined one appointment would divide his life into a clear before and after.

Like any other morning, Rhett said goodbye to his wife and their children, leaving their rural home in Jimboomba for what he thought would be another routine appointment with his ophthalmologist in Brisbane. Diagnosed as a teenager with an inherited eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa, Rhett was familiar with regular check-ups.

The day that changed everything

After his appointment, Rhett’s ophthalmologist told him that he was unable to drive himself home.  In that moment, Rhett understood how much was going to change – not just for him, but for everyone in his family.

Twelve years later, Rhett still remembers how lost and uncertain he felt

“I still thought of myself as a sighted person with really poor sight, rather than as a blind person with some residual vision. I was scared to admit I had a problem. I was struggling to get out of the house and go places. Losing my sight was incredibly emotional.”

Losing his independence changed how he saw himself, how he connected with the world around him and how he showed up for the people he loved most. Everyday tasks became harder, simple things, like getting groceries or catching up with friends, started to feel overwhelming.

Along came Trixie  Gd Trixie (3)
When Rhett connected with Guide Dogs, he found more than support. He found understanding, community and hope for what life could look like moving forward. And he found Trixie.

Trixie has become much more than a trusted companion providing emotional support. She has helped Rhett rebuild confidence, regain independence and reconnect with life in ways that once felt out of reach. Importantly, Rhett can focus on the moments that matter most - being present with his family.
